During the hard night there was an episode when the genoa furler lock got accidentally released and in a second I got fully released flapping genoa.
The whole incident lasted about a minute before it got furled back, but what I found during today's inspection — another €100 expense on genoa sheets. Both of them have to be replaced.

23 March 2024

Another #shine&#shame refueling. But this time it was even more awkward.
People at the beach were "wtf?", guy at the fuel station was "wtf!?" but most of it were from Ursa, who's been hoping for at least overnight ashore and were jumping out of the dinghie twice certainly, utterly unwilling to get back to the boat.
Poor dog.

21 March 2024

90 liters of #shine&#shame: fuel in the marina is sold for €2.19/liter, but at the car fuel-station it's about 1.78.
So decision was simple: take a cart, go buy 4 canisters and fill them at the car station.
Same money, but now I have 4 canisters. :)

Now it's official: Sardegna-Palermo leg is done.

14 March 2024

15:06 https://y-b.one/boat-life/249/

So, there were three long days of fixing the engine.
The trouble was the overheating. And it seemed like the engine was unable to push salt water through the heat exchanger: a tiny amount of water went out and the impeller bearing was leaking, which happens almost always just because of the excessive pressure in the unit.
Complete disassembly of the cooling system revealed that the boat engine was serviced by His Majesty the King of all gays in the Universe. This prick replaced the remnants of the old impeller with another one and said nothing to the owner, just waiting for the engine to overheat. And when it started failing, just issued a quote for a major engine repair for 7000 euros.
I checked the engine before starting my trip and it was okay-ish. Seems like rubber pieces fell down and unclogged the system a bit but during extended operation the system clogged back and I've got what I got.
Now everything is absolutely fine and I'm free to go.
Planning to start tomorrow evening.

I went to the FontMagic site and chose few variants that I like. Font must be readable from a far and not too funky.

Please, put in comments which one do you like the most — either color or font-name.

This is a sunrise recording. The wind is still high, about 28 knots, but the swell didn't build up yet and we already left the most scary mess.
In about two hours the wind will change direction again and we'll get about 35kn of downwind which was the best direction for me since I was already exhausted.

Autopilot is my true hero this night. It was literally fighting on my side against the weather and was a crew member.

While passing the shoreline I saw the catamaran, which hid from the weather in a tiny-tiny spot, but tonight this spot will be open for the incoming wind and swell so I wish the best of luck to these people to handle it at this place.

A single working marina for 70 miles around got a sand bank formed during the last storm and cannot host us tonight.

Short stats for my single 450W panel.
So, in a winter month a single panel produced 20kW of power. Could be more by 25-30% if I don't connect to the shore power.

So, the plan is to triple my solar batteries or even quadruple if I'll be able to. Then to double my power storage. Now I have 3kWh AGM batteries, effectively providing me with 1500W of power stored. I'd like to have 3-4kW. And switch to 48 volts, and switch to lithium.

That was scary as hell.
Yesterday, after refueling, I decided to go to the marina 12 miles away, because I didn't like the forecast. My very sensitive butt was screaming not to go anywhere but the only marina for surrounding 50 miles got the sand bank right at the entrance and they didn't remove it yet. So we had to try to go.
But at midnight, after several hours of chilly sailing at 16 knots, someone turned wind full throttle — to 30 knots and gusts about 40-45.
During this night I knew by experience what "broaching" and "heave-to" are. I wish I never knew it.

Now moored at Crotone and going to stay here at least until Friday.

It was hell of a night.
Yesterday we departed at 0700 from Teuldada and started sailing to Sicily. At about 1400 wind died and we started motorsailing.
At 1740 dense smoke from under the hood and a buzzer signalled that we're having troubles.
At the moment we were 25 miles SE to Sardegna with the west wind of 20-25kn.
Choice was to go 150+miles forward, having a high chance to get catched by the very nasty swell from Gibraltar or fight the way back to Cagliari against the 30kn apparent wind and 2m swell but only 35 miles.
Decided to go back. At least we will be closer to the rescue if something will go even worse.
So, with up to 40° banking during the 35kn gusts we fought our way back and successfully reached the gulf of Cagliari where were just 12-15 knots of wind with a tiny swell less than 0.5m.
But at the 0100 there were no one in 7 marinas around to tug us to the mooring so I decided that we're going to sail back and forth the gulf with about 15% of the open sail area at two knots, close to drifting until the morning come and someone will be able to help us.
Finally at about 1000 we got an answer and help.
At the moment we're moored at Marina di Capitana. Planning engine inspection and voyage for coolant, at least.

Almost finished Sardegna-Sicily leg. 60 miles to go.
Autopilot gone completely rogue. Its compass showing the weather at Venus, autopilot function works only at the left tac, and overall its state is "completely out of order".
I have to fix it before continuing the journey, but the internet is completely silent about such symptoms.
