Happy birthday, sir Pratchett!
By some happy occcasion we’re sharing the day and I’m very pleased about that — easy to remember. :)

"Bomzh-engineering" in all its miserable beauty. :)

19 April 2025

12:51 https://y-b.one/boat-life/765/

Plus another phobia:
Looks like this boat had flexible solar panels attached to the bimini. Once they got flapped with the fabric too much and something broke inside the panel, which caused the short-circuit and fire.
Result: a huge amount of cosmetic job in the cockpit but the carma was not too bitchy to the owner and there's no other visible damage.

Salt water pump for the kitchen is almost ready. Not very convenient that it shares intake with the toilet, but there's no better solution at the moment.

The thing you don't think about much in the cockpit — powerbank.
Usually, there's a charger port or even multiple ports which you can use to feed your phone or something. But the reality is that all of them are inconvenient to have your device in use while charging. Always.
And they rust and fail at crazy speed: once you forgot to seal the port after use for a day or two — boom(!), welcome to the shop for a new one. USB-C port contacts are less than a millimeter thin and even slightest breath of salty air eats them.

So I had my powerbank in reach and was happy about it.

But I've found that its days have passed. Battery expanded and the case lid poped out. That means that it should be removed from the boat asap, because the next step is KOZA (short-circuit within the battery) and fire.

Hence I had to buy a new one. Better, faster charging, very informative display showing me the charging currents.
Expensive af, but too valuable device to save money at.

I have an old friend from my very youth, and we look like brothers. Our acquaintances — both his and mine — have even mistaken us for each other multiple times.

My friend has a daughter who made him a birthday gift by painting a picture from a photograph.

Of course, the person in the photo is me. Even his own daughter mixed us up! 🙂

Found the cause of the mold growth in the front cabin — leaking bolts of the windlass base plate.

I see two ways to fix it:
- Undo all fifty bolts, clean everything, paint, install everything back with new bolts and a lot of sealant, paint again.
- Just clean on top, paint over bolts.

First variant — two days job, about €100 on parts.
Second — relatively free (I have acetone and paint) and about an hour job.

Sure thing I'm going second variant first. Sure thing, I'll find later that it didn't work well.

By any chance, do we have here anyone willing to spend couple of weeks living on a boat in marina, going nowhere, just taking care of my dog while I'm away doing my long overdue business?
Location: Bosa, Sardegna.

*Photo is here just as a visual description of the things I need to get done.

This is the standard fuel filter. I need a standard salt water filter to protect the pump from the debris in the water. The standard filter cartridge is made with ordinary metal and will dissolve in salt water within a month. I had to invent some solution to replace it and do the job. So, my habit of saving various items with the reason "might be useful later" paid again. The empty bottle from the ibuprofen fits perfectly after 5 minutes of careful adjustments. :)
Now I have to find my Dremel and make a couple hundred tiny holes in it.

Learning simple things the hard way.

When I was fixing the boat at the boat-yard last summer, I've replaced most of the seacocks. And what I didn't do — I didn't paint seacocks inside with antifouling paint.

About a month ago I got my head clogged and since then I was forced using the second one while I was trying to fix the issue. I've tried a lot of different approaches from inside. Pressure, water, cleaning solutions, steel wires and half of these attempts were literally shoulder-deep in shit.

Yesterday I've ran out of other options but to launch a dinghy and try doing it from the outside trying to reach the hole from underneath. And you know what — the hole got clogged just with barnacles. They grew so much that ever liquids couldn't pass.

So, lesson learned. Paint holes inside as deep as possible with at least three coats of antifouling.

Now I have my own true shit-story to share with others while having a sundowner.

The pic is just a random boat at the yard I'm spending winter at which name I always read as "Diarrhea" at first. Poor boat, I'm sorry.

It was absolutely no necessity nor real reason to buy this thing. Sort of a guilty pleasure for 35 euros.
I'm not even sure whether it brews the coffee really better than the old 8 euros aluminium moka or it's just my persuasion that it should do so.

Tho, the new one works with the induction stove too, which is really great.

If you think I'm playing fool — nope, I don't.
This is a crucial safety device for the pump-powered water-supply. It dampers the pressure kicks in the tubes when the faucet is opened/closed. Without it all the system struggle a lot and it leads to breaking tubes and greatly reduces the pump lifespan.
Marine-grade pressure damper costs between €23 with 3 weeks delivery and €67 for the fancy branded one with two days delivery. This one is €8 with the drink. :)

Here’s a little report about how much does it cost a full-time living on the boat.
A bit of a salty surprize regarding the money spent on fishing gear. I’ve lost 5 lures in total, bought 4 of them. 5 lures are about €100 total. Bought two cheap sticks and some line. Maybe €250 total. What I’ve spent another 350 on — have no idea. Probably, misclicked some expenses into fishing gear. I guess, it was a full tank of fuel.

Kinda surprizing sum for boat electricity. This is a sum of 4 LiFePo batteries, solar stuff and all fancy Victron stuff I have.
Gonna spend another €300-400 on replacing my lost solar panel wih the new panels.

Having fun while having no job.

This is an output for the app I’m writing just to have myself busy and fingers flexy. :)

By any chance, do we have here anyone willing to spend couple of weeks living on a boat in marina, going nowhere, just taking care of my dog while I'm away doing my long overdue business?
Location: Bosa, Sardegna.

Nice thing for small dogs, but I need the same for Ursa. Been told they will think of it.

Exactly 1 year ago I’ve finished the first passage. Dog looks like thinking “wtf I just experienced!?” None of us yet knew what’s going to happen next. 🙂

Just for fun decided to cut open the tube.
That was definitely a good sealant. It's a pity it solidified.
